Kulis/Guthath

My print Kulis/Guthath talks about the two tides up here in the Torres Straits. The out going tide – Kulis and in coming tide – Guthath.

In my design Kulis & Guthath is represented in the circle formation and the Torres Strait Islands are represented by the dark hill shape images outside the circle formation.

These two tides plays a important part when we travel to neighbouring islands back and forth in tin dinghys because Kulis, the water is calmer and being shallow we can travel behind the reef shelter. Usually we don’t travel when its Guthath time, where the tide is coming in which cause rough and wavely waters.

The Turtle and Dugong Totem that represents in the circle outside the design are found in the Torres Strait waters
