The term Thupmul Au Thonarr means Stingray Season. When the NW season is upon us, which is usually towards the end of the year from November to early March. This is our wet, monsoonal time. Growing up on the islands during this time, us kids when the thunder claps, lightning strikes, we hear the elders cry out “Thupmul”. This we know that the stingray has now come up to the shallows.

When hunting this creatures you look for dirty patches on the clear sand and can be speared by a one prong spear. The thupmul is a totem of the Argan people of Badu and those whose who belong to the Thupmul Clan are prohibited to eat it just like all other Totems.
