This image is a portrayal of the common healing properties and beliefs associated with the Awbaw here in the Torres Strait islands and across the pacific islands.

Awbaw – ‘Noni fruit’, also known to us in the Western islands as Dhogai Ay – (Ghost food)name was depictive an associated with healingthe body when the ripened fruit was eaten in times of unwellness. The Awbaw tree itself was said to have spiritual possession hence the fruit called Dogai Ay was believed to be aqueuer for sickness e.g. Flu’s, Body pain, lifting energy and general wellbeing.

Within the image of the Awbaw stem and leaf I capture the islands way of life and also the cultural belief of the spiritual connection to the Awbaw Tree/fruit. I also capture our connection to creatures we share ourenvironment with in and around the Torres strait islands and sea country.
