This plate is worn by single women who identify themselves from the dugong totem clan. The patterns shown between the dugongs depicts the status of single strong independent free spirited women. As a cultural protocol, women from one clan cannot marry into the same clan, they may only marry to a different totem clan. The woven mat like markings within represents me as a Torres Strait island women.
